A long time ago, in January 1997 a chatroom called "Vices and Virtues" sprang up in AOL, sponsored by iVillage, and it's motto was "Come as You Are."
This philosophy represented a Big difference in our room from most of the others on AOL.
As hosts, we were told Not to "overly" enforce the TOS rules, and just let folks have fun as long as it was done in a mature fashion. Our "unofficial" Theme Wav was a bit from Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"......."Is the the Real Life, is this just fantasy?"
It was a Very Eclectic site, and included Themed Hosted Chats every night of the week, with topics ranging from the discussions of wines to sex trivia chats and Wav exchange chats.
Most people who became regulars in the room just kinda stumbled in there, loved the different atmosphere, and stayed on. The most Amazing thing about VnV was that you could wander in there at Any hour of the day or night and find Many roomies there to greet you and make you feel welcome. Sure, we had our share of Snerts and problems, but we were on the way to being the Best Chat room in AOL.
We grew by leaps and bounds, when suddenly iVillage (in their infinite wisdom) decided to close the room because they were "going in a differant direction."
The room was officially closed on 09-02-97. :-(
Soooooooooo..........the hosts and roomies were told that we were "moving" our same chats and loose, sometimes wild style to another Chat Forum called "About Work." We were to be an "extention" of the room, and kinda like an "After Hours Pub."
Almost immediately, the "style" of our chats was changed by Managment, and both the hosts and roomies were outragaged, and there was quite a commotion over the changes, especially after we were "promised" that the old VnV-style would remain.
After only a few months, AWAH closed it's doors too.................But, and this is the Weird part......the room itself was kept open by AOL.
There are a few stories as to just Why the room stayed open, but no one truly knows for sure.
Some of the hosts decided to try and have chats held in other private rooms, and there was a split in loyalities, and a lot of disruption in the "family of friends" because of this.
Eventually, we realized that AOL wasn't gonna close the room and a few of us wanted to keep the spirit alive and continue to have Unofficially "Unhosted" chats in AWAH.
Many of the folks who inhabit the room today were there from the beginnings of VnV. We have Always tried to be a Mature, Friendly place where Tolerance and Respect for others was just as important as the Fun and Craziness of the chats.
We always kept our doors open to newbies, and welcome all who wanted to share in the "Come as you Are" philosophy.
The room is probably as Unique today as it was "way back when" and we still Rock!!
